All HISD Schools Open Tomorrow

Following an announcement form the nation Center for Disease control, the three Houston Independent Schools currently closed due to swine flu – Wilson Montessori, Stevenson Middle School and Lyons Elementary School – will reopen with their normal scheduled tomorrow. Episcopal High School will also reopen tomorrow.

The CDC now says the swine flu is not dangerous enough to necessarily close schools, and those already closed may reopen.

The Houston Independent School District currently has three schools closed due to the illness – Lyons Elementary, Wilson Montessori and Stevenson Middle School.

The Centers for Disease Control announced Tuesday it no longer recommends schools be closed if one student is confirmed with the disease.

“New information on disease severity warrant revision of the school closure guidance,” the CDC said. “Most U.S. cases have not been severe and are comparable in severity to seasonal influenza.”

The CDC now recommends that the best way to reduce the spread of swine flu in schools is to “focus on early identification of ill students and staff” and then have those people stay home while they’re sick.

“School closure is not advised for a suspected or confirmed case” of swine flu, the CDC statement said. “And, in general, is not advised unless there is a magnitude of faculty or student absenteeism that interferes with the school’s ability to function.”

Schools that already had closed because of past CDC recommendations may now reopen, the CDC said.
