A Bellaire High School senior is one of 55 students nationwide to win an award for studying the Russian language.
Jackie Liedtke was named a Russian Language Scholar Laureate by the American Council of Teachers of Russian, a professional association with 1,650 members.

“Scholar Laureates are serious, dedicated students,” said Liedtke’s Russian teacher Lisa McLendon in a statement. “Jackie is the epitome of the student scholar, but she is so much more. Her enthusiasm for learning and her behavior is exemplary.”
Liedtke decided to study Russian four years ago because she thought it would be a good match for her planned career in engineering. Now she is vice president of the Russian Club and a member of the Slavic Honor Society. She said she wants to visit Russia during college.
“Studying Russian gives you an insight into how the country has progressed and how different their culture is,” Liedtke said in a statement. She credited her success to McLendon’s helpful and patient teaching style.
Liedtke is applying to eleven universities that have well-known engineering departments. She said she may minor in Russian.
