Four Candidates Ready To Race Towards Runoff

Election

Last night’s election celebrations didn’t last long for four Bellaire City Council candidates who are already planning strategies to win in next month’s runoff election.

Corbett Parker and Roseann Rogers will battle for the Place 3 seat on the council, and Andrew Friedberg and James Jameson are competing for the Place 5 seat.

Parker and Rogers both said they’ll lace up their shoes to tour Bellaire encouraging as many residents as possible to vote for them.

“I only got to 85 percent of Bellaire and lost 20 pounds,” Parker said about his campaign leading up to election day. “I need to get to the other 15 percent and lose five more pounds.”

Rogers said she called Parker today to congratulate his success at winning 49 percent of the vote. Rogers won 28 percent. She said she thinks the runoff is a chance for a “clean slate.”

She wants the voters who chose opponents Richard Franke and Marie Anstead to vote for her in the runoff, although she acknowledges poor voter turnout may be a challenge.

“We really need to reinforce our message and talk to more people, that you know, your vote makes a difference,” Rogers said.

Voter turnout was also on the mind of Place 5 Candidate James Jameson last night when he learned he won 35 percent of the vote, and was headed for a runoff against Andrew Friedberg, who won 47 percent.

“It’s a lot of work. Your expectations are set pretty high to win it all,” Jameson said. “And unfortunately the turnout was disappointing.”

Tuesday night voters cast 3,182 ballots in the city election, which represents only 15 percent of registered Bellaire voters. Jameson said he will continue meeting with voters and talking about his qualifications.

Friedberg said he will stick with the same message and strategy he used during his campaign: Walking the streets and talking with voters.

“We had a lot of fun with the campaign, and I figured why stop now? We could have six more weeks,” Friedberg said. “I’ll just push through with my message about the vision and experience I have for the city.”
