A Bellaire High School student won a $43,000 scholarship at a recent state chess championship and is now headed to the national competition.
Junior Matthew Michaelides and senior William Ong, both members of the Bellaire Chess Team, tied for first place during the Texas Grade Championship competition held at the University of Texas at Dallas. Ong had won the $43,000 scholarship last year.
Junior Joe Feng pulled a second-place win in the Sophomore division of the contest.
The Bellaire Chess Team is heading back to Dallas from Dec. 11 to 13 to compete in the United States Chess Federation National Tournament.
