Bellaire Chess Team Bags 1st-Place Win

Bellaire High School’s Chess Team beat the toughest chess teams in the nation last month at a tournament in Dallas.

The 12th grade team won first place in the nation at the United States Chess Federation National Scholastic K-12 Chess Tournament, held Dec. 11 to 13. The team is made up of seniors William Ong, George Fan, and Wolfgang Minskey.

William Ong took home the first place trophy to become the Nation’s #1 Senior Chess Champion.  The 11th grade team took 3rd place in the Nation, led by Matthew Michaelides.  Team members were Jeff Feng, Stuart Axel Lloyd, and Aaron Wernick.  Other Chess Team members who went to Dallas and helped bring home the win were Lokin Casturi, Scott Delhommer, Joe Fang, Suman Mangu, and Janak Sheth.
