In the first of many efforts to raise $22,000 for a new piano, Bellaire High School is hosting a playathon on Saturday featuring the school’s orchestra and piano departments.
Soloists, ensemble groups and orchestras will perform back-to-back for 12 hours on Jan. 23. The event is free, but the school is hoping that attendees make charitable donations so the school can purchase the new piano.
The school’s auditorium currently has a Baldwin grand piano that is “beyond repair,” according to the Bellaire High School newsletter. The orchestra and piano director, Kathryn Brown, has identified a new model that will be used in the music programs as well as theater, dance and talent shows.
The new Mason and Hamlin Model BB will cost $34,000 and of that amount, the school has already set aside $12,000. Fund raisers and donations must make up the remainder.
Bellaire High is accepting community donations to help with the purchase. Donors will be recognized in concert programs, plaques or name plates. For more information, contact Kathryn Brown at (713) 295-3751 or email kbrown@houstonisd.org.
