Suspected Drunk Driver Causes Injuries In Multi-Car Accident

Four people were taken to the hospital on Saturday afternoon after a car accident that police suspect was caused by a drunk driver. The accident happened Feb. 6 around 3:30 p.m. in the 5600 block of Loop 610 North.

The suspected drunk driver slammed into the rear of the stopped car in front of him, causing a chain reaction when that car also hit the vehicle in front of it. Three passengers, as well as the drunk driver, were all taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police are withholding the name of the driver pending the outcome of a blood test.

Bellaire police arrested two other drivers for driving while intoxicated earlier in the week.

On Feb. 3 around 10 p.m., an officer saw a vehicle driving erratically. It was going 10 mph, swerving between lanes, and driving on the wrong side of the road. Another officer responded to the scene and saw the car hop a curb and drive on the grass. Officers stopped the vehicle in the 6900 block of Baldwin Avenue, and found the driver was intoxicated. Dax Villanueva, 31, was arrested and charged with the crime.

On Feb. 5, police responded to the 4600 block of Holly Street because a driver was asleep behind the wheel. The officer discovered that the person was drunk, and had fallen asleep with the transmission in drive. Gregorio Morales, 29, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

Also during the week of Feb. 1 to Feb. 8, residents reported three home burglaries.

  • On Feb. 2, police responded to the 4800 block of Palm Street after a resident reported that someone broke into the home. The burglar stole televisions from the house.
  • On Feb. 4, a home alarm sounded in the 4700 block of Holt Street. Police found that someone entered the gate, shattered a window to force entry through the back door, and stole items from the second story of the home.
  • On Feb. 6, someone forced entry into a home in the 4600 block of Verone Street. Residents reported several items were missing from inside.

Other incidents reported to police during the week include:

  • On Feb. 2 around 12:30 a.m., police saw a car going 60 miles per hour in a 40 miles-per-hour zone. An officer pulled the vehicle over in the 5900 block of Loop 610 West. During the traffic stop, a passenger admitted he had been carrying marijuana and he ate the drug before police caught the car.
  • Bellaire police on Feb. 2 recovered a car that had been stolen in Houston. An officer saw the car parked in the Bellaire Public Works parking lot, ran the license plate number, and discovered it was stolen.
  • Police responded to the 6500 block of West Loop South on Feb. 5 after receiving a call about a family disturbance. Officers found a woman who was red in the face with a swollen and bleeding lip. Police learned the woman’s fiance had struck her during an argument. The Harris County District Attorney’s office accepted charges on the suspect, and police arrested and charged Byron Mathis, 24, with assault family violence.
