The Bellaire City Library will soon get new reference materials, furniture and funding for children’s programming thanks to a $12,782 donation from the Friends of the Bellaire Library.

The fundraising group met on Feb. 8 and decided to donate the money to fulfill the library’s “needs list.” On Monday, the Bellaire City Council voted unanimously to accept the donation.

The library intends to purchase the 2010 edition of the World Book Encyclopedia, and a supply of Bookpage Magazine, which informs readers about book reviews and articles. The funds will also supply the library with a data projector and a new computer stand.

About half of the money, $6,200, will be used to support children’s summer programming. The library plans to give incentives to children who participate in summer reading programs — About 900 kids participated last year. The funding also helps library programs for kids and teenagers.

The library is also using $300 to decorate the front of the book drop with art, with the help of the Bellaire Arts Commission.
