The Bellaire City Council will make decisions to approve the construction of a replacement Paul W. Horn Elementary School and the construction for an expansion to First Street Surgical Center at their meeting at 7 p.m. tonight.

Council held a public hearing for the replacement Paul W. Horn Elementary School on April 19. Houston Independent School District (HISD) presented their plans for a new Horn Elementary School to the council and if approved, will be completed in August 2011.

The existing Horn Elementary School was built in 1945 and can accommodate 502 students. Currently 572 students are enrolled for kindergarten through fifth grade. The new school is designed for 750 students.

The council held a public hearing for the expansion to First Street Surgical Center on April 26.

First Street Surgical Center was built over three years ago and now they are seeking permission from the city for a 21,000 square feet expansion to accommodate 19 hospital beds.

Jacobo Varon, M.D., a plastic surgeon at First Street Surgical Center, is petitioning on behalf of the Lenox Hill Holdings Ltd., for the abandonment from the city for a 60 foot right-of-way of Chestnut Street between Bissonnet and First Street.

The city of Bellaire will make a decision to sell the street to Varon and approve the expansion of the hospital at their council meeting tonight.
