Bellaire Residents Take Part In Fourth Of July Celebration

Bellaire celebrated the Fourth of July with their “Grand Ole Flag” festivities on Saturday.

A children’s parade led the way for the parade to Bellaire Town Square with a festival afterwards.

The festival included carnival games, a petting zoo, dunking booth and inflatables. Food was sold by local vendors and civic groups.

The Bellaire High School FFA is celebrating their 5oth year of shows this weekend.

Students will have their animals judged at 3 p.m. on Friday and Saturday they will have a silent auction and barbeque lunch from 11 a.m .to 12:45 p.m. The live animal auction will follow at 1 p.m.

The Bellaire FFA Farm, 11611 Riceville School Road, is located between Gessner and Beltway 8 on Riceville School Road.

Bellaire City Manager Bernie Satterwhite on Monday updated the city council about the March 12 gas tanker truck accident that snarled traffic in the area for the entire day. Condit Elementary School Principal Fred Bowyer was surprised today with a $1,000 personal prize and $2,500 for his school through the H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards. Bowyer was one of eight Houston-area educators to win awards. He is now eligible to participate in a statewide competition to win up to $25,000.

Council Names Li Boynton As Outstanding Citizen

Li Boynton, an 18-year-old student at Bellaire High School, was recently named an Outstanding Citizen of the City of Bellaire. Boynton earned a $65,000 award in a top science competition with her invention of a novel, cheap way of testing water for contamination. For her accomplishment, she was invited to sit with First Lady Michelle Obama during this year’s State of the Union address.

As freezing rain transformed into snow Friday morning, the Bellaire Fire Station took the next step in its transformation from an old, inadequately small facility into a brand new fire station that will accommodate the modern Bellaire Fire Department. Crews began demolishing the old station at Jessamine Street and South Rice Avenue, and officials expect construction to begin within the next couple of weeks.

People React With Sadness About Teas Nursery Closing

Longtime customers of Teas Nursery reacted with feelings of sadness and disappointment this week upon learning the 100-year-old Bellaire business will soon close.

Tom Teas, the president and head of the landscaping side of the business, refused to speak with InstantNewsBellaire about the closing because he said he had no new information to give other than what other media outlets reported over the weekend.

Other news organizations reported that Teas plans to sell its five-acre property in the 4400 block of Bellaire Boulevard to private developers who aim to build homes on the land.

The nursery site used to encompass 10 acres, but the company sold off half the land to home developers in 2002.

It is unknown whether the nursery will relocate to another area.
